Business Dragon Slaying Session 1: Step by Step Guide for On-boarding New Employees

On-boarding new employees might may you feel like this, but here are some steps to help!

Today we’re going to go through a Step by Step Guide for on-boarding new employees. Now remember, when we’re talking about on-boarding a new hire, a little advanced planning can eliminate stress for your new employee and ensure no step in the process is overlooked by your company’s HR department or Office Manager.

Step One! Define your company’s on-boarding style.
Portland State University's Talya N. Bauer calls this the Four Cs: Compliance – Clarification – Culture – Connection

A blend of all four makes for the most seamless on-boarding process.

So let’s break them down one by one.

Number one: Compliance

Compliance covers all the basic rules of the position the employee been hired to fill. Everything from certifications or legal requirements, such as HIPPA compliance all the way to - "Where do I sit?" and "What’s the procedure for opening the office in the morning?"

Compliance covers what most people think of when we talk about onboarding, but it doesn’t stop there.

Let’s move on to the second C: Clarification

This is a more in depth breakdown of the specific tasks the new employee will be responsible for and this also covers all those delightful questions your new team member is sure to have! Even the most seasoned employee will still need their questions addressed – so be sure to make time for that in the on-boarding process.

The third C is Culture

This helps set your new employee up for success by letting them know right away what they can expect from other team members and leaders in terms of communication style, working styles and the things that make your workplace unique.

The fourth C is the one I’ve found to be most overlooked – Connection

To really give your new hire a firm foothold in their new role it is essential to make sure they know the right process for engaging their co-workers. Is there a company coffee club? Do you allow for or maybe even schedule company after-hours social events? If so, let your employee know!

This will lock in your new employee’s engagement and help them stop feeling like “The new guy or gal” as soon as possible. This will really increase their productivity when they feel like one of the team.

Let’s go over this one more time – The 4 Cs

Compliance – Basics of the job

Clarification – Make sure their questions are answered

Culture – Start off letting them know what to expect

Connection – Help them get engaged and be more productive right away

Okay everyone! That’s it for now. I’ll have for more tips for you in my next video.
